The pointlessness of analysis

‘Norwich are gonna get absolutely battered tomorrow. If NCFC play like last week, and CFC play to their best it could easily be 10.’ – Adrian Durham, Talksport.
At the end of my last blog I mused on how much Adrian Durham liked the sound of his own voice. I know the man is put on the airwaves to incite listeners into responding to his banal attacks on teams and players. It’s a ratings winner, he says something brash, people repeat it, some phone in but more tune in to see what all the fuss is about. That makes for happy station owners.
But surely there is some way of debating teams and games without using the lowest common denominator: insults. The opening quote to this blog, to me is a snide, cheap insult.
Durham, as with the majority of football fans hasn’t played the game at any recognised level, merely parrots what he hears in the media, recounts the facts that suit his argument and generally talks a lot of hot air based on little or no knowledge of the game. The only thing that sets Durham aside from the rest of us who drudge to stadia every week is that he has somehow managed to forge a career out of talking about football.
Not too long ago he called Jamie Carragher a ‘bottler’ for retiring from international football. Carragher called into the show to protest, quite rightly. And what of Durham? Well he became very meek and much less brash in response to a direct rebuttal of his idiotic comment.
My point is I’m tired. I’m tired of mindless nobodies commenting on the beautiful game just to score easy points. I’m tired of the turgid ‘analysis’ of games on the television. I’m tired of the circus.

Can’t disagree with any of that. Well said. Bang on the money.
