How Football came to terms with a Heartbreaking Sunday

Well, Not really a week to do my usual blog looking back on the latest Norwich City game from last weekend, which is a shame because it was a great Saturday, 3 points at Carrow Rod with a win against QPR, a game we all thought a win was possible and we got it. Proud of Norwich City! I’ll leave it there because as you all know Sunday’s events tragically overshadowed all Football last weekend.

Last Sunday was an awful day, truly unexpected news was announced to the world.

From my own personal side of things, I first found out the tragic news about Gary Speed at the top of Sky’s “Live Ford Super Sunday” coverage. As ever, I was looking forward to watching Sky’s games, seeing the great intro titles with all the classic Premier League players and enjoying two great games. I put the channel on at exactly 1.00pm and they were already talking in the Studio, I knew something was wrong. I hadn’t turned the sound up yet, but I knew Graeme Souness wasn’t himself, he looked emotional. So I turned the sound up and heard the discussion in the studio along the lines of “He will deeply missed”, “Its absolutely tragic news”, “We must think about his wife and two children who he leaves behind”.

I still didn’t know who they were talking about at this point, which was an awful feeling, so I checked online and they I knew, Gary Speed :( Tragic!

I was amazed to hear both Swansea V Aston Villa and Liverpool V Man City were still taking place, Full marks to everyone involved in both those games, who did their jobs to the best of their ability because Gary would of wanted them. Shay Given was an inspiration! Extremely moving pictures of him as he took to the pitch, and what a hero! Incredible display, a true credit to Football.

Both sets of fans in both games deserve a huge round of applause for a great tribute before kick off in both games.

The most important thing about this devastating week in Football is that we remember Gary every day, and think about his wife louise and his two boys who are left without a husband and a father.

Gray, Thank You for your contribution to Football both as a player and manager, you were a true legend of the game.

Lets hope both ourselves and Manchester City can put a game on that Gray would be proud of tomorrow afternoon.

Gone but never forgotten,

RIP Gray Andrew Speed MBE (8th September 1969-27th November 2011)
